Historic Reunion Highlights Scientific Collaboration Visit Between UFC and the University of Virginia

Data da publicação: 5 de junho de 2026 Categoria: Notícias

Charlottesville, Virginia (USA) – More than a schedule of scientific meetings and discussions on international research projects, the recent visit by the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), through its Center for Biomedical Research (Nubimed), to the University of Virginia (UVA), from May 19 to 21, was marked by a highly symbolic moment in the history of scientific cooperation between the two institutions. Amid the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the academic partnership between UFC and UVA, a special reunion brought together researchers who helped build one of the longest-standing and most productive international collaborations in Brazilian science.

Professor Aldo Ângelo Moreira Lima, one of the key figures in this remarkable trajectory, had the opportunity to reunite with physician-scientist Richard L. Guerrant and administrator Leah J. Barrett, two individuals who played central roles in strengthening and sustaining the UFC–UVA partnership over several decades. Now retired, both made invaluable contributions to the continuity and expansion of this collaboration, which has helped train generations of researchers and advance important studies in global health, infectious diseases, nutrition, and biomedicine.

The reunion was celebrated during a commemorative dinner held in Charlottesville, in an atmosphere filled with memories, recognition, and gratitude. The gathering provided an opportunity to revisit milestones that helped shape the history of scientific cooperation between Brazil and the United States, highlighting the human dimension behind five decades of joint scientific achievements. For those in attendance, the occasion represented not only a celebration of academic accomplishments but also a recognition of the friendships and professional bonds forged over many years.

The roots of this collaboration date back to the late 1970s. In 1978, visionary professors such as Galba Araújo, Nogueira Paes, Manassés Claudino Fonteles, Maria Auxiliadora de Souza, Richard L. Guerrant, and Aldo Ângelo Moreira Lima initiated discussions that would eventually lead to the creation of the International Scientific Research and Development Agreement between UFC and UVA. Under the leadership of Professors Maria Auxiliadora de Souza, Manassés Fonteles, and Richard Guerrant, the initiative became a landmark in the internationalization of scientific research in Ceará and in the training of highly qualified human resources.

One of the earliest research projects developed within this partnership originated from Professor Aldo Lima’s master’s thesis, entitled “Study of the Effects of Vibrio cholerae and Escherichia coli Toxins on the Isolated Rat Kidney.” Supervised by Professor Manassés Fonteles, with Richard Guerrant serving as scientific advisor, the project generated findings that contributed significantly to understanding the biological mechanisms of bacterial enterotoxins and anticipated discoveries related to endogenous hormones known as guanilins. These achievements demonstrated, from the outset, the scientific potential of the UFC–UVA collaboration.

This year’s visit was part of the commemorative activities celebrating 50 years of academic cooperation between the two institutions, internationally recognized for their contributions to infectious diseases, microbiology, nutrition, global health, and biomedicine.

By the end of the visit, beyond the scientific progress achieved and the new collaborative opportunities identified, it became evident that the strength of the UFC–UVA partnership extends far beyond research projects and publications. The reunion of researchers who helped build this history symbolized the continuity of an academic legacy that began nearly five decades ago and continues to inspire new generations of scientists in both countries.
