The Federal University of Ceará (UFC), through its Graduate Program in Medical Sciences (PPGCM) at the Faculty of Medicine, hosted a distinguished academic program focused on Omics Sciences and Biostatistics from July 27 to 29, 2026. At the invitation of Professor Aldo Ângelo Moreira Lima, coordinator of the course Clinical Research II: Omics Sciences Applied to Antimicrobial Pharmacology, Professor Luis Carvalho, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Boston University (USA) and Director of the M.S. in Statistical Practice (MSSP) program, delivered an intensive course entitled Fundamentals of Bayesian Statistics Applied to Omics Sciences, covering the principles of probabilistic inference and their applications to high-dimensional biological data.

In addition to the course, Professor Carvalho presented the seminar “Statistics and Machine Learning in Medicine: Applications in Genetics and Omics Sciences,” bringing together undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and faculty members from the fields of health sciences, statistics, and computer science. The presentation highlighted recent advances in Bayesian statistics and machine learning for precision medicine, genetics, transcriptomics, and other omics disciplines, emphasizing methodological approaches capable of handling large-scale biological datasets and supporting the discovery of new knowledge in biomedical research.

The program was made possible through the support of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics (DEMA/UFC), coordinated locally by Professor Silvia Maria de Freitas, who provided the department’s computer laboratory and the infrastructure required for both theoretical and hands-on activities. The collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine and DEMA created a multidisciplinary learning environment that fostered interaction among researchers from biomedical, statistical, and computational sciences, further strengthening participants’ training in modern quantitative methods for clinical research.

During his visit to UFC, Professor Luis Carvalho, Professor Aldo Ângelo Moreira Lima, and Professor Silvia Maria de Freitas also held meetings to discuss opportunities for international scientific collaboration between the Federal University of Ceará and Boston University. Their discussions focused on the development of joint research projects, faculty and student exchanges, advanced training in Statistics, Data Science, and Omics Sciences, as well as future collaborative initiatives in strategic areas of translational medicine. The visit represents another important milestone in advancing UFC’s internationalization efforts and strengthening institutional partnerships that promote high-impact scientific research and innovation in healthcare.
